Dave and I keep going back to Lucky House. We’ve pr0bably been there half a dozen times in the past two months. The food is good, the people are nice. This is beef with garlic sauce. Lots of veggies. Good stuff. Lucky House is on 6th Street in Emporia, across from Braum’s.
Guy & Mae’s
Guy & Mae’s is an unassuming brick-front building in Williamburg. Upstairs is the Mason Lodge, next door is the City Hall. This restaurant is one of the 8 Wonders of Kansas Cuisine and will be featured in a soon-to-be-published guidebook by the Kansas Sampler Foundation. Inside is a long room with booths and bar stools. …
Genovese
When Dave and I were in Lawrence on Saturday, we tried Genovese, an Italian restaurant on Mass. St. Dave had a hamburger and fried potatoes. And I enjoyed my wild mushroom and spinach panini.
Olpe Chicken House
Early Friday evening, Dave and I headed for the Olpe Chicken House for dinner. Olpe is about 10 miles south of Emporia on K-99. And the restaurant is along K-99, so you can’t miss it. This is the main dining room at the Chicken House. There are two additional rooms on either side. With a …
Old Mill Tasty Shop
Yesterday, in Wichita, Dave and I met some friends at the Old Mill Tasty Shop for brunch. I didn’t sample any of the fountain drinks or ice cream products, but they were available. I had the breakfast burro. Very good. Never had donkey before. Seriously, is there a culinary difference between a burrito and a …
El Paisa
Dave and I found our way earlier this week to El Paisa, 1406 Industrial in Emporia. Not too long ago this place was Fat Chuys. It still looks the same, and much of the menu is the same, but they’ve added tacos to the mostly-burrito menu. Since we had burritos when it was Fat Chuys, …
Lucky House
Lucky House Chinese Restaurant has just opened up where Cravings was, 841 W. 6th in Emporia. The owners are new in town, coming here from Chicago. Ordering counter. I had the Kung Pao chicken combination plate. They have large servings and I brought home most of this for at least two more meals. Dave had …
Commercial Street Diner
Last Friday, Dave and I went out to breakfast at the Commercial Street Diner in Emporia. It was a little icy out, but as ice storms go, not too bad. I had the half-order of the traditional breakfast. One egg, two bacon strips, one slice of toast and hashbrowns. Although the hashbrowns looked like a …
Christmas dinner
My sister-in-law Nancy baked this huge and delicious ham for the family Christmas dinner on Sunday. Nancy and Dave’s mom put a lot of work into these meals. I try to make up for my measly cooking contributions by washing dishes. Eggnog. All these years and I’ve never tried eggnog – I don’t think anyone …
Freddy’s – now open
Freddy’s Custard & Steakburgers is now open in Emporia at 1400 W. 6th (formerly Popeye’s and before that, KFC). They opened today at 10:30 a.m. with at least 20 employees ready to serve. Dave and I were their first in-store customers today. Dave had the double-meat Patty melt combo. I had the single steakburger combo. …
Bucket o’ ribs
When I got home from work Tuesday night, we had a time crunch for supper – Dave had to be somewhere else that evening. I recalled that Tuesday was bucket of ribs night at Bobby D’s, so off we went. We can order a bucket of ribs with fries for $11.99, split it, and still …
