I was already on the daffodil theme this morning when a young woman named Amanda sent me a photo of her mother. It was Amanda’s mom that I wrote about in a 2003 column called Every Year, Daffodils which I posted last month to commemorate Lori’s birthday. Lori died in 1996. So, here’s an photo …
Smarter than me
Janet Fish brought it to our attention this morning that today is Pi Day. March 14, a.k.a. 3.14. Well, there was just some guy (Marc Umile) on NPR who has memorized pi to 12,887 digits. Yes, that’s twelve thousand, eight hundred and eighty-seven digits. Hear the interview on NPR. There’s also a link on the …
Eastside Update
Here’s what’s up at the Eastside Memorial Park (Ninth and East).
Crocus alert
I’d given up on the crocus. Aren’t they supposed to show up at the end of February, first of March? This one peeked out this morning. It’s a quiet morning here in E-town. A windless, kind of hazy morning, 43 degrees. Lovely, just lovely.
Update: Time
No, my Smart alarm clock did not automatically adjust to the 3-week-early Daylight Saving Time change. My cell phone did not spring forward. But my computer did. Anyway, now I’m wondering… in three weeks, at what would have been the normal time for DST to begin, will my Smart alarm clock and my cell phone …
Tiger’s friend
This cat doesn’t live here, but wants to. He sneaks into the house to eat Tiger’s food which causes Tiger to give us a how could you look. The cats tolerate each other, but yesterday they were rolling on the porch, wrapped in each others claws, screaming.
Hens and Chicks
I like hens and chicks. Don’t know how the plant got its name though. And if there’s just one plant, is it called a hen and chick?
Happy Birthday, englishbloke!
You live a bit too far away for me to sneak over and hang this on your porch, Simon, so this will have to do: Happy Birthday to my favourite Brit! (Was gonna add some flowers, but decided on the manly buffalo instead.) P.S. for those who don’t know Simon, here’s a brief …
a cruel joke
Ornamental strawberry plants.
Yeah, baby
The neighbor’s yard is greening up nicely. Just happened this week. Saw someone wearing a tank top at Reeble’s the other day. Some mornings, birds sing. The thermometer stays above freezing. I can’t use “it’s too cold” as an excuse to not wash the car anymore. In what do you see spring?
20 degrees off
Wasn’t the temperature today supposed to be 44 degrees? That’s what forecasters promised the other day. Lovely. So, I made plans to go to Topeka this afternoon to hear Ted Kooser read poetry. A writer friend was going to go along, but she canceled this morning due to illness. Anyway, now that it’s time to …
