Wasn’t the temperature today supposed to be 44 degrees? That’s what forecasters promised the other day.

Lovely. So, I made plans to go to Topeka this afternoon to hear Ted Kooser read poetry. A writer friend was going to go along, but she canceled this morning due to illness.

Anyway, now that it’s time to leave, the temperature is 24 degrees and there’s a 50% chance of freezing rain later this afternoon. The radar shows white and pink stuff moving toward Emporia and Topeka.

Now, of course, that means there’s a 50% chance that I wouldn’t have to drive home from Topeka in the freezing rain, but does one even believe that 50% stuff when the weathermen were 20 degrees off on the temperature? Hmm? I think not.

So anyway, I don’t think I’ll go although I’d love to hear Ted Kooser – former U.S. Poet Laureate – and one of my fave poets of all time. He’s a Midwesterner and tends not to include references to French Literature in his poems. His writing is clean, straightforward and powerful.

I own three of Kooser’s books: Local Wonders: Seasons in the Bohemian Alps, Winter Morning Walks: One Hundred Postcards to Jim Harrison, and The Poetry Home Repair Manual.

Good stuff.

  1. Earlier today they were promising it to get clear up to 60 mid-week. Was supposed to be in the 40s tomorrow. But now they’ve put off the 60s til the end of the week. Well, that means nothing really. Only supposed to get to 37 tomorrow.

I’m pretty tired of being cold. I’ll live, but I might start complaining yet more, escalate my moaning and groaning about the weather if it doesn’t warm up some pretty dang soon!

  2. Just heard from some friends in Topeka and it sounds like things got pretty nasty there today. I’m glad you avoided the “fun” weather. As for me, I spent most of the afternoon in bed!

  3. I’m just about ready to get a grow light and turn it on, go fake bake or something. I’m getting crabbier than an old bear in hibernation. My children and co workers are ready for me to go on vacation.

  4. SSSSPPPRRRRROOOONNNNGGGGG !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That was me snapping! On top of the already foot (or feet) of snow and ice, it’s coming down now, and all day, and tomorrow…………
Supposed to have 40 on Monday. Big deal—if it happens—but it’s gonna take more than that to get rid of a bunch of it.

At least the streets are OK enough to get to work………WHOOPEE !!

basket case…basket case, basket case…..don’t worry about me …I’ll be just fine…as long as the straps on the strait jacket don’t get too tight.

no, i’m not a psych nurse but i did stay in a holiday inn express last night…

    Please ignore the previous submission.
We got to Helianthus just as he was about to start chewing on the mouse pad. We secured the mouse, unhooked the keyboard, and shut down the computer.
We will keep you posted on the extent of his snowandicephobia and treatment for same.

  6. It’s about the only thing I have left in my limited arsenal of coping devices. That and the hope of the arrival of spring and getting back out on the golf course. (Oh, yeah, maybe a bit of yard work, too.)

  7. Hang in there, H-43 (well, don’t hang literally), spring WILL come. It WILL. It WILL. It always has. The earth is tilting, the sun is hanging around minutes longer each day. Blue skies will return, snow will melt, grass will green up. Trust me on this. 🙂

  8. OK…So I put on my steel-toed, black high-topped boots and bang the heels together and chant: Spring WILL come…Spring WILL come…IT WILL, IT WILL, IT WILL !!!!!!

  9. Be sure not to confuse those steel-toed, black high-topped boots with your red sparkly shoes. The boots will make spring come, but the red shoes will fling you straight back to Kansas. (Which may be a nice thought, I suppose, except that winter has swallowed us, too.)

  10. Well believe it or not we have sun at the present time here in Garnett. I’m not saying anything out loud about it because I don’t want to scare it behind a cloud.

  11. It has been very interesting to have a Google Alert for Blogs on “Kansas Flint Hills!”
I see your articles regularly in the Emporia Gazette, but had not picked up on the blog.
Nice article on Joyce Thierer, also. A really neat lady!
    Also want to mention: http://www.kansasflinthills.travel/
Our web site to promote the Kansas Flint Hills; and:
There will be a 22 page color photo spread in National Geographic’s April Issue on the Kansas Flint HIlls, as a distinctive landscape.

We are really looking forward to the increased interest following that event.
    Best wishes!

    Bill 😉
