From 6 a.m. on Friday through noon today, the Phi Delta Theta fraternity is conducting their annual Pole Sit. Since 1985, they have raised more than $55,000 for S.O.S. (Services Offering Safety – for victims of domestic violence.)

Basically, Phi Delts take turns sitting on that pole (!) and others collect money from kind folks in cars passing through the intersection of 12th and Commercial.

This guy is talking to the passersby over a megaphone. “Make a difference in someone else’s life,” he says. “If you have a penny, even a single, solitary penny lying around, donate it to S.O.S. Just stick your arm out of the window, drop some coins in the bucket and you’re on your way.”

I spoke with Phil Kelly, faculty sponsor of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He thinks the Phi Delts are a bunch of good guys – and that’s been my experience too. I hung out on Phi Delta property several times to watch their house being built (see various posts.)

Homecoming weekend is the time for the annual Phi Delta Theta Pole Sit event. Phil Kelly said they hope/expect to raise $3,500 and will pass all of that money on to S.O.S. to help victims of domestic violence.
