Sue Smith puts price stickers on the backs of Flyover People books that she’s going to carry in the Prairie Maid store – part of the Emma Chase Cafe in downtown Cottonwood Falls.

Then she put the books next to the PrairyErth books which made me feel kind of proud.

Sue is part of the community’s swirling energy that keeps bringing people to Chase County, Kansas.

And Sue invited me to have a book table at an event she’s hosting on Oct. 9.  So, I’ll be there selling and signing Flyover People books at a bluegrass session. I think the music will be held inside the old city auditorium on Broadway in Cottonwood Falls.  Come early to the Emma Chase for dinner from 5 – 7:30 and then stay for an evening of bluegrass. Here’s Sue’s description.

Jeff Schaefer has formed a BlueGrass pick-up band, which he is calling “”RoundAbout””.

He is bringing the group to town on Saturday, October 9th. The group on this occasion will consist of: Jeff Schaefer – Guitar, Ryan Durst – Guitar, Jimmy Campbell – Banjo, Jeremy Littrell – Bass, John Faris – Mandolin. Jeff sometimes performs with the Basement Pickers out of Emporia.. Ryan Durst was part of one of the very first evenings of BlueGrass at the Emma; which we called the evening “”Leonard Harper’’s Birthday Party””. Jimmy Campbell’’s wife performs with Judy Coder, and Carla and he were both at Friday night Pickin’’ a few weeks ago. He is a spectacular musician. We know Jeremy Littrell only by reputation…..and what we know is good. John Faris is a member of the Faris Family BlueGrass Band. Need we say any more? Hmmmm. See ya’’ on the 9th!

I then drove to Council Grove yesterday afternoon. The Council Grove Public Library purchased a copy of the book, so local residents will have it available to them.

The library has a comfy-looking seating area with good armchairs and a loveseat.

The glare on the window was pretty intense, but I managed to get an angle that showed the name of the store – Valerie’s Gifts and Such at 211 Main in Council Grove. Valerie agreed to carry Flyover People. This store has several rooms and quite a nice selection of merchandise.

It was a gorgeous day to be out roaming around Kansas. The weeds in the ditch along US 56 are turning a red-brown color. That’s where our fall color comes from – the grasses.  Kansas is rich with grasses and autumn colors.

  1. My parents took us to the Emma Chase cafe last weekend & a wonderful concert with our friend Dan Bliss (opening for Australian guitarist Nick Charles). We had a delicious meal & fun time all around.

  2. “Valerie’s” is my favorite store (well, I haven’t been in every store) in Council Grove. It used to be “Eleanor’s Card & Party” store, because “eleanor” was Valerie’s mother. I like their kitchen stuff! (I usually buy gifts and then I have to buy me one, too….)

  3. and, I ate lunch at Emma Chase Wednesday. I had the salad bar and a piece of rhubarb pie (they warm it and put on a dollup of ice cream–yum!)–salad & pie–what could be better?
