Brownell

My dad and I made a quick drive through of Brownell on K-4 last month. Brownell has about 40 people and is in Ness County.

The cinderblock building used to be a Phillips 66 station – you can tell from the colors. I have no idea if that big old wooden building was a house, a hotel, or what.

Forty people and a post office. Lucky they still have it. But, hey, Freeport has two people and still has their post office. (I was going to put a link up to photos of the Freeport post office, but apparently I never posted them. I’ll have to do that. Great post office in Freeport.)

Kansas is full of old gas stations. Here’s a classic.

  1. How can a Californian be homesick for this? I can only wonder. Thanks for bringing back those feelings again, Cheryl. BTW, I am going to be attending church services in Mingo (pop. 50) at the end of November. It’s Exit #62 on I-70. Can’t wait to get back to the flatlands! EFH

  2. When I drive through small towns, or even around Madison, and when I see your pictures Cheryl, I get this longing to buy one of those neat old buildings and fix it up. The one and only thing stopping me is money!

How about a little coffee shop in that store next to the Post Office in Brownell? Of course with only 40 people, it likely wouldn’t be a big profit maker. Just seems like it’d be a nice thing to have right there.
