foot

Busted!

A tiny bone in the upper right side of my foot is cracked.

Can’t put any weight on the foot for 6 weeks. It’s in a splint. Get a cast next week. It’s my driving foot, so I can’t drive. Stuck at home.

I only went to the doctor because you’re supposed to go to the doctor for things like this. I thought it was just sprained or something and would heal on its own. At the most I figured he’d just say, ‘nothing I can do for it, it’ll heal.’ I never ever expected to come home with crutches – or that I couldn’t put weight on it for 6 weeks. Or that it would be in a cast – or that I couldn’t drive. Argh!

Need a project that will amuse, entertain, maybe even educate me…….

  1. Oh no! At least you got in and got it taken care of. I probably would have hobbled around on it for weeks until it healed wrong and was never the same. I hope the time passes quickly for you. Do you embroider? Crochet? Knit? Anything else crafty? I know you like to read and write. Maybe this is a good time to get some more of that in.

  2. Crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, facebook, but I’d rather you wrote a tory, fiction something about elves and fairies, a kids book. Or a story about one of your childhood adventures.

  3. now is the time for dave to give you all the tender love and care he promist. take advantage relax take a pill ask for ice water and a pillow!!!

  4. Hope your foot heals fast! This must be your time to slow down and see life from a slower pace. Hope you have several good books you wanted to have time to read!

  5. Ouch — is right! What can we do for you?–or what can I do for you (maybe I’d better not include the whole FOP family…)?

  6. I don’t know ele…. When I start going stir crazy, it might be good to have someone come and get me out of the house for awhile. (Since I can’t drive with a cast on my foot.)

  7. Ow ow ow! So sorry Cheryl! I broke a bone in my right foot about five years ago, waited two days to see the Dr (thought it was only sprained), had to wait a week for the cast because of the swelling, couldn’t drive for six weeks, developed armpit bruises from the crutches… etc. Sound familiar?

Please don’t copy my wrist thing too in five years time. Once is more than enough! 😉

My heart goes out to you. May you heal quickly and may the greatest difficulty you face in the coming weeks be deciding which color cast to get!

  8. Gotta be extra careful now for secondary accidents resulting from improper use or falling off those training wheels. While on crutches with a broken leg a few years back, I headed into a restaurant bathroom that unbeknownst to me had a flooded toilet. As I hobbled through the door, the crutch slid out from under one arm on the wet floor and down I went, but the crutch tip jammed up against the edge of the wall and stopped, then jammed me in the side (I hadn’t let go yet) as I fell into it, breaking a rib. As long as I didn’t lay on that side, cough, talk, laugh, or breathe, I did just fine while my leg healed. You can’t put a rib in a cast. So, remember that, and slow down while on those training wheels, and try not to do any wheelies.

  9. I’m finding the wheels, so far anyway, much safer than the crutches and the hopping.

I’d hop around in the kitchen after filling ice cube trays and spill some on the floor – or hop/crutch around with a glass of tea and spill some. Yeah, wet floor and crutches – dangerous.

But yeah, Shep, I’ve been keeping the possibility of secondary accidents in mind and trying not to make any stupid moves.

  10. Well, here’s something else to think about that I learned the hard way during the same recovery. One night late the phone rang. I was in one of those deep, dead sleeps and awoke startled. I threw back the covers, and vaulted out of bed headed for the phone in the living room. Full speed ahead turned into hop, hop, hop, crash! I sprawled out flat, face down, on the living room carpet with an “ugh.” My wife was now giggling loudly. I forgot that my leg was broke. Funny what you forget when you’re not totally awake. I now forgot what the phone call was about.
