Today’s my birthday! And to celebrate, yesterday Dave and I went to the Hays House in Council Grove for lunch.

The place has a long history, which you can read about on the Hays House link (above.)

The entryway in the Hays House. Straight ahead is the front door. The main dining room is through the double doors.

The dining room. There were a number of other diners, but most were seated around the edge of the room.

Dave had the skillet-fried chicken. He said it was excellent, better even than the Brookville chicken.

The camera flash didn’t do this photo any favors, but … I had the hot roast beef sandwich and mashed potatoes. Also a dinner salad came with this meal.

Now, these were real mashed potatoes, as all mashed potatoes should be. Very good, with a few lumps for texture. Yum.

And the roast beef, well let me just say that this tasted like roast beef used to taste. After years of eating beef with the flavor drained out of it – this beef at the Hays House was good, good, good.

And then there was that scrumptious piece of pie. Incredible.

$4.95, but worth it.

They also often make a terrific strawberry shortcake. Today they also had creme brulee, which was tempting.

Upstairs is the tavern and more dining space.

The upstairs women’s restroom has a tub – and a bird cage.
