JOYCE THIERER AND PEPPER

Joyce Thierer, history professor at Emporia State University, is the recipient of the “You Make a Difference” award at ESU.

Jeremy McMannis nominated Thierer for the award and is quoted in an article in today’s Emporia Gazette: “She is a valuable asset to this university with her knowledge of public history and she puts forth 150 percent to make sure all her students succeed even though she is not an advisor.”

Nice.

Not only does Joyce teach history, she lives it. Joyce Thierer and Ann Birney do a wonderful job of showing and teaching history through their Ride Into History performances. Joyce recreates the life of Calamity Jane, Rosa Fix, or (as pictured above) a woman named Grower. Ann can be seen as Amelia Earhart, Elizabeth Hampstead, or Julia Archibald Holmes.

It’s fun stuff. I hope you all get the chance to see them perform sometime.

P.S. Dave took the photo at last summer’s Symphony in the Flint Hills.

2nd P.S. I rode that horse once and didn’t fall off.
