Around Emporia

Red Rocks (above) was William Allen White's home at 927 Exchange St. It is now being preserved as a state historical site. White was acquainted with national figures such as Teddy Roosevelt and Albert Einstein. In 1948, White was honored on a 3-cent U.S. Postage stamp.

The White name is attached to many Emporia landmarks. William Allen White Elementary is across the street from Red Rocks. Emporia State University has WAW library. The Civic Auditorium is named for his son, William Lindsay White. Peter Pan Park was created in memory of his daughter, Mary. And just north of the Emporia Gazette is White Memorial Park, a small cement park honoring both WAW and WLW.
The Lyon County Historical Museum (previously the Emporia Public Library) is a 1902 Carnegie library. Emporia and McPherson are the only towns in Kansas to receive grants for two Carnegie libraries.

Anderson Library, the other Carnegie building, is on the campus of the former College of Emporia. It now holds Emporia State's archives. It's an incredible building with glass floors (thick ones). The building's west wing is a wonderful room for poetry readings and small gatherings.

College of Emporia graduates (as well as graduates of the Way College which occupied the campus in the 1980s) signed their names on the interior wall of the dome.
