The Emporia Zoo is in Soden's Grove Park on the south end of town, just before Kansas Highway 99 jumps the Cottonwood River.
|
Usually the mountain lion rests in its
cave, but this particular morning it is out for a walk. Well, the
lion is not exactly out, but as out as it ever gets. |

It's not just a zoo, it's a garden. Packed
with flowering and green plants, the zoo is a sanctuary. Trees, cactus,
flowers, vines and shrubs add shade and soften the angular lines of
cages and fences. |
Under the shade of a mimosa tree, a
trumpeter swan balances on one leg. |
