In a photo taken last summer, my brother, Leon Unruh, points out something of note from atop Pawnee Rock State Park.

Now I’ve always liked that the Rock was described as “a famous lookout point along the Santa Fe Trail.” Our Rock was and still is something special.

The Dakota sandstone feature was once much taller than today’s Rock. Much of the sandstone was quarried and used in buildings in town until 1908 when the land was preserved as a state park.

Some of the sandstone is in this falling-down shop in town.

Leon is the lookout for Pawnee Rock.  He maintains a daily blog of the town’s history and current events at PawneeRock.org.
