Yeah, it’s just another stretch of Kansas highway, but I’m feeling a need for a piece of serenity right now – big ol’ sky, open road.

  1. Have you ever been to a really vertical place? I mean, where the hills are crowding in on you, there is sky up there somewhere but the trees mostly block your view of it? Or maybe it’s in a city where the hills and trees are concrete, but sky is still at a premium.

I would take any road like this anywhere in Kansas over all of those vertical places.

  2. I have a problem saying what I’d take over what. It’s all so beautiful, except in smog.

Those places have their place. I lived in the mountains in California and from my front yard I could see a bit of sky. The rest were the most beautiful trees. I loved it.

I camped at Jedediah Smith State park in the redwoods in California, just South of the Oregon border. YOu had to look straight up to see the sky from my campsite. The treees were SO tall. It felt very powerful. I would love to be there right this moment, for a while anyway.

I’ve been in big cities where the sky was straight up just about, and you could follow it down the street. Big cities are exciting.

I’ve spent time at the beach many times watching the sun set in the West. The ocean, aside from the movement of the water, is quite flat. You really can, at the right beach on a cliff, see the curvature of the Earth.

Kansas skies are beautiful, and the sunsets often glorious. When living in Emporia I saw some of the most beautiful sunsets I’ve ever seen due to the color. And the sun was setting behind Sacred Heart Church steeple. We’d stand in the yard with our arms around each other and gaze in silent awe at that. Just stunning.

I love it. All of it.
