Or flautist, if you prefere. At City Market in KCMO, this gentleman played his flute beautifully. While drinking our coffee/chai off in the distance we could still hear him. He visited “How Great Thou Art” a few times.

  1. Was that bucket next to his leg on the chair for donation? I remember a man in downtown Long Beach playing the accordian in the early to mid-1960’s. He kept a contained near his feet for people to throw money in.

And at Hancock Park in Los Angeles, (La Brea tarpits fame) on the weekends in the ’80s there were mimes and musicians earning money the same way.

I’ve always thought that was a wonderful way to make money. They’re doing something they love for people’s pleasure, and making money doing it.

I don’t know if she’s still around, but there used to be an older lady artist, maybe NYC or maybe it was D.C. She would make pictures, carry them inside her coat and stand on the steps of some famous art museum and try to sell her paintings to passersby and visitors.

I enjoyed her story so much. She was doing what she loved, sharing it with the world, and although poor as a church mouse, she was making some money.

  2. Busking. The players/singers/artists who perform out on the sidewalks are buskers.

There are a number of folks who do that in Lawrence, with varying degrees of artistry.
