In Kansas, we don’t have many scenic overlooks – not because we don’t have the scenery – because we don’t have the height to overlook from.

This place always cracks me up. On the east side of Dodge, there’s a scenic overlook – overlooking three feedlots. Yeah, boy. When visitors come to Kansas, we show ’em what we’re made of: steaks, rump roasts, ground beef. It’s what’s for dinner, ya know, beef.

I know, it’s hard to distinguish the cattle in these photos – but they’re out there, standing around, eating. That’s what they’re here for – to get fattened up for slaughter. (As opposed to the lucky cattle who get to spend the spring and summer lolling around in the Flint Hills pastures eating grass.)

According to the sign here, these three feedlots off in the distance can handle 60,000 head of cattle at a time.

Also something you can’t see – the fences out yonder. My friend Tracy, Dodge City native, tells me that her hubby, Rand, helped build those fences. (I’m sure you remember Rand from Farmers Market photos.) Maybe Rand has some fence-building stories to share.

  1. Yes, those were the good old days. Per Cheryl’s request, I have taken a trip down memory lane on my blog. Click on the link in her entry.

  2. It appears that the “Queen of the Cowtowns” sign has only been egged or paintballed four times and shot at twice. I notice a zigzag mar as well. Every community has detractors who are often people with little self-respect/self-esteem, I feel. These individuals were probably playground bullies when they were younger.

  3. I noticed the paint balls too. Had to go back and look for bullet holes and zigzag, found’em. Yeh bullies or wannabe’s. Someone who resents authority, maybe one of the cowboys looked like someone who had arrested them earlier in life.

  4. Ha! I stopped at that scenic overlook. If I remember correctly, there was a brightly painted, down home, Mexican restaurant nearby that served delicious food.
