Retired geology professor Paul Johnston. (ESU’s Geology museum is named after him!)
Paul Johnston a member of the Emporia Camera Club and Wednesday evening the club had their annual dinner at ESU. Well, two doors down in the Skyline Room, Paul had his watercolors on display. We were let into the room and got to view his paintings. He really has some gorgeous work.
He had a couple dozen paintings on display – some very nice stuff – landscapes, buildings, flowers.
Paul’s work is amazing for a self-taught watercolorist. His scientific eye came in handy as he pursued this art form.
His paintings are just amazing! I think the one in the middle of your second photograph is the one he had entered at the fair and received the grand champion. I had to ask him HOW he did it–I couldn’t figure out how he had the seemingly “water” drops on the leaves/petals–did he drop water on it? Did he sprinkle it with salt (like we used to in grade school)? No, it was something else that I would NOT have even thought to do.
He splattered the plain paper with a polymer medium before painting.
I really love that farm scene! Just beautiful!
That is my favorite also. It is a small format, one of the smallest of the exhibit.
Look at the clouds in that farm scene. Those are magnificent.
