Last week, we drove through Gas (pop. 505) in Allen County. I wanted to see if Bonnie’s Corner Cafe was still there. Bonnie’s was the cover shot for Gary Gladstone’s 2003 book, “Passing Gas … and other towns along the American Highway.”

Gary Gladstone returned to Kansas a few years ago for another photograph for his sequel to “Passing Gas,” “Reaching Climax… and other towns along the American Highway.” There is a Climax in Kansas, but Gladstone found one elsewhere. In his sequel he photographed someone at Spasticville, a long-gone Kansas community between Park City and Valley Center.

Yep, Bonnie’s is still in business, although it appeared to be closing for the day when we stopped by for the photograph.

And Gas has a pretty cool water tower.
