On Thursday, gas prices were down to $3.38 here in Emporia, so I said to Dave, how ’bout a road trip this weekend? And he said, yup. Then on Friday, gas prices went back up a bit, some places to $3.59. But on Saturday, we found it for $3.44.

So we sat down and looked at the ol’ Kansas map and figured out where we wanted to go. North? South?

Two roads diverged on the Kansas prairie and sorry I could not travel both…

We went south. We decided to take the turnpike to a jumping off point – El Dorado (which, by the way, I always call El Dora Do, because a long time ago, I heard a radio DJ, reading a weather report, say that a storm was passing through El Dora Do.)

South of Emporia along the turnpike is a Welcome to the Flint Hills sign. The guy who quarries this rock says its marble. Geologists say its limestone.

  1. Wow! What a neat sign. (Alan could have done just as well.) However, it is a wonderful sign to see on the highway. Another reason for us to go to El Dorado. We don’t get out of town much! Ha!
