From Marci Penner’s June 2008 We Kan! newsletter, issued by the Kansas Sampler Foundation:

Lucas, population 487, the Grassroots Art Capital of Kansas, has announced a fundraiser for its new project of designing eccentric public restrooms.

A call for entries has been extended to anyone that wants to decorate a one-of-a-kind toilet seat, and for a $5 entry fee, donate the work of art to an exhibition that will show on August 30 in Lucas.

The custom-designed toilet seats will be auctioned off on October 18 for the public restrooms project.

  1. Ok Janet! This sounds like something right up your alley! Or should I say loo? Anyway I’ll buy the seat if you’ll paint it and donate it!

  2. LOL, I’ve got it half done already. Started it weeks ago. I’ll post a picture of it when it’s done.

This is one of those really funky benefits, for a town public bathroom. No doubt it’ll be the coolest public restroom in Kansas. I can hardly wait to see it.

Lucas is an art place, and that creates a neat atomsphere in that town, IMHO. But there are no public restrooms there. They want to attract tourists interested in art, so a public restroom is a necessity.

  3. I was in Lucas last Friday and I picked up a sheet on the design a toilet seat thing. I thought my kids might enjoy that project. The girls couldn’t believe I wasn’t kidding. The boys got home last night and I haven’t told them yet. I bet my 14yo artist will do it.

I’m going to write about my visit to Lucas soon. It’s really an incredible little town. When I saw the town from the highway, I figured I’d be there for 30 minutes or so at The Garden of Eden. I spent over 3 hours there and would have spent longer if the ceramic shop would have been open.
