Flowers, jelly, squash.

Tomatoes sold out quickly today, as did the corn. But there were lots of other goodies: cabbage, beets, cantaloupe.

You know how Mayberry’s Aunt Bee had a butter-and-egg-man? Well, I have a buffalo-and-egg man, Jim Wallace. He’s at the Farmers Market on Saturdays and might start coming on Wednesdays. He and his wife go to a number of area markets on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays. The meat sells well, Jim says.

Jim had some losses from the rain – tomato plants. He said one of the other vendors lost 160 tomato plants to the flooding.

All you have to do is aim a camera at this guy and he’ll pose for you.

These two are new to the Emporia Farmers Market, coming all the way from Topeka with tacos, tostadas and tamales. I had two tamales and can recommend them.

They’re trying to build up a following here. To everyone, he said, “See you next Saturday.” “Come back next Saturday and tell me how you liked the tamales.”

And Rand Simmons. Because you’ve come to expect seeing him every week.

Went to Wal-Mart this morning. I know! Sometimes I do go there (but I don’t enjoy it.) The four-lane Industrial Road is down to two lanes over I-35 because they are fixing that screwed up access ramp from eastbound I-35.

So Industrial Road is now a mess. And on Monday, the Graphic Arts bridge over I-35 will close for construction (for 8 months or so, I think.)

Which means that you can’t get to NW Emporia without traffic hurdles. And that includes the high school, middle school, the Social Security office, Wal-Mart, Staples, the huddle of restaurants at I-35 and Industrial.

Oh, and 30th Ave. is also closed, so 24th is going to carry all of the added E-W burden. As will Prairie Street – for N-S access over I-35.

Crossing I-35 may not be too bad during the summer, but will become a real pain when school traffic starts in August.

  1. Notice the beautiful flowers in the top picture. While we were there, one lady bought all of those flower arrangements. Sure made a beautiful trunk in her car. Probably going to make a lot of beautiful table arrangements somewhere.
We are certainly dreading the work on Graphic Arts. We live in the Deerbrook Addition – between the high school and the water park. When they closed the road to put in the round-about, we would go “down town” by way of Americus Road, then go into Emporia on Hwy 50. There’s no way to do that now. You take your life in your hands going from the Flying J to the stop light at Graphic Arts.
Our son-in-law is JJ Stutler at Stutler Technologies on Graphic Arts by 12th Avenue. It certainly won’t be a hop skip and a jump to pick up or take our grandchildren to their Daddy for the next 8 months – and to think, school will be starting soon. Since they live in the country, our home makes things easier (??) during school.
