Here are more photos from Monday’s Learning Connection class with Janet C. Fish of Madison, artist, doll maker.

Anyone who makes dolls out of expanding insulation foam and adds feathers for hair, has not only a sense of humor, but a wild creative streak.

Below is Slug doll, Baby Within and Naked Dancer with Pink Toe Shoes… (my names for them, I don’t know what Janet calls them.)

Cheryl Patton of The Learning Connection and Janet Fish hold up a large faceless doll. Now Janet didn’t make this doll and she doesn’t know who the artist is, but she’s had this creation for a long time and loves having it around.

  1. I cannot tell you how much I enjoy that giant lady doll. She’s old and the stains on her are the real deal, not coffee or tea stained to age her. She’s very large. She will likely fall apart one day. But in the meantime, we’ll enjoy her.

What we’ve done with her……… let me ‘splain.

We have a mannequin we bought at Newman Dept store when they closed down a few years ago. We took it apart and took off the arms.

Her torso from the waist up, sans arms, is now a lamp. I’m not quite finished with her, but she sits on a table between me and Larry and lights up our lives. She has a light fixture coming out the top of her head now and a lampshade. But I have to finish her up.

Her body, from the waist down is still on the stand. We took an old table, removed the top of the table and put it on the top of lower half of the mannequin. The figure was quite tall, so it is a high table.

We bought a used bar stool and sat that next to the tall table, and sat that giant doll on it. She looks like she’s about to have a conversation. I should get another bar stool so people can sit with her and talk to her. Won’t be me, and besides, what if she talked back?

I hope I was clear. *I* can see it, so might have left something out.

  2. Janet I knew we were friends——but our minds work alike!!!!!! That is really scary!!!!!!
When we owned a Mom & Pop motel for many years—several years ago—-our daughter lived in Dallas– & she acquired a mannequin for us which we named Sue Ellen—(as she came from Dallas)—well What Sue Ellen didn’t do is not worth telling———–I could write a book about Sue Ellen & her adventures alone over the years—–!!!!!
But everyone who traveled past our Motel looked for Sue Ellen & what she would be doing NEXT!!!!!!!!
After all I drove a Bubble gum pink hearse-with rest in peace at the name of our motel on the tail gate!!!!!!!!!!
Well I was going to drive to Dallas to visit our daughter—–& most of the trip was going to be alone & after dark——–so since Sue Ellen didn’t bend——& took her apart at the waist——& the car we had for sale in the front yard– I stuck her legs under it—so it looked like some one was laying under the car——& put the top half of Sue Ellen in the passengers side of the car—-with a hat & sunglasses———& off I went——-in my diesel station wagon -When I got to a truck stop in Okla——I had to go to the diesel pumps–to fill up——–& when I came outside from paying for the fuel—there were trucker all around my car——–I was sure something awful had happened—–& I walked up very quiet to hear them talking about Sue Ellen——–& that she was a dummy——-& then stories these truckers were telling about different dummies they had seen all over the USA——-One was telling about this dummy that was always in the front yard of a motel at Mussel City–in Kansas— & told stories —& some of them sounded very familiar——-then realized he was talking about me & Sue Ellen & our motel at Strong City-but he called it Mussel City——& then realized it was us he was talking about———at which time I whipped out my business cards– & gave them all one– & said-yes it is us in person!!!!
I said –we were going to Dallas to visit my daughter———& Sue Ellen & I had a truckers escort all the way to Dallas!!!!!!!!!
I bet those truckers had some more stories to tell about Sue Ellen!!!!!!!!
