Tomorrow is not only Emporia’s 150th birthday, it’s also PANCAKE DAY!

Yes, tomorrow is Shrove Tuesday, when good Christians get their sins shriven.

Now see, I would’ve thought the spell-checker would be all over “shriven,” but even though it sounds peculiar, it is actually a word – and my smarty-pants spell-checker knows it. (Shriven: to be shriven is to be confessed and to be pardoned from one’s sins.)

Anyway, oh yeah, PANCAKE DAY is tomorrow. Fat Tuesday. Liberal Kansas vs. Olney England. Hey, I ought to make a bet with my pal, the englishbloke, that the Kansas girls carry off the trophy this year. (P.S. to Simon – how about it, buddy?)

Anyhoo, where was I? Oh yeah, I’m gonna be on the radio tomorrow morning, talking about Pancake Days past. Today, my KPR friend Joseph DiNitto tells me that they’ve “added a few little extras” to the commentary. I have no idea what that means.

But, of course, I have absolute faith in J. Schafer and Joe DiNitto at Kansas Public Radio. They use their SUPERPOWERS to make me sound better than I normally do. They suggest alternate phrasing and emphasis, clean my spit off the “tape,” and select the perfect music to close out my commentaries. These guys are fine, fine radiomen, the best in the biz.

I’m still a bit uncomfortable in hearing my voice over the airwaves, but I shall be bravely listening Tuesday morning at 6:35 and 8:35 a.m. (which are the most likely times for airing. If not at those exact times, then sometime between 6:30 and 7 a.m. AND between 8:30 and 9 a.m.)

You, too, can listen. Radio is free (although your membership in KPR would be greatly appreciated.)

Your listening options:

1) If you live in Northeast Kansas, turn your FM dial to: 91.5 Lawrence, 89.7 Emporia, or 91.3 Olsburg-Junction City- Manhattan.

2) Listen live – online.

  1. I only hope I can REMEMBER to listen in the morning!
I love the picture of the pancakes! Every Shrove (FAT) Tuesday the men’s group at St. Mark’s fixes pancakes, so if you’re hungry for pancakes, come at 5:30 and get some! (I’ll be there!)

  2. Oh good! I love listening to you online. I can’t get it on the radio. I know, I cringe when I hear my voice recorded too. But take my word for it, you have a great voice for this.

  3. Okay Cheryl, you’re on. No upstart yahooin’ KS gals are going to beat hard working honest English wenches! But what to bet… something KS against something English, I guess. The loser gets to choose what to send… though sending large and costly objects, like Cadillacs or Bentleys, across the Atlantic must be severely discouraged.

Okay – now to hear your latest radio piece….

  4. …but, hang on a minute! Just re-looked at the pic of the pancakes in Turn Your Radio On and… er… they’re huge and thick! Brit pancakes are like French crepes: thin and elegant and inherently stylish. You’re telling me that you guys eat more than one of these US monstronsities at a sitting? I imagine the pic is of a family serving… or, worse, perhaps not…
