No need to send a card …because he’s a historical figure…he’s dead. 😮

But – today is William Allen White’s birthday!

Born in Emporia this date in 1868, William Allen White rose to national fame with his 1896 editorial, “What’s the Matter With Kansas.” And he wrote the heartbreaking piece about his daughter’s death, “Mary White.” A piece called “To An Anxious Friend” won him a Pulitzer in 1923.

Although he was born here, White grew up in El Dorado. He attended college in Emporia and Lawrence, then went to work for the Kansas City Star. In 1895, he purchased The Emporia Gazette for $3,000.

In honor of his birthday, tours of the White family home are FREE today at the William Allen White State Historical Site, 927 Exchange, Emporia. Hours are 2-5 p.m. today (last tour beginning at 4:30 p.m.)
