Flyover People Small Towns:

Pawnee Rock, Kansas - Page 3

Pawnee Garage- along U.S. Highway 56. A Vickers gas Station used to be next door. And for something to do, my friends and I walked to "the station" and bought gum or bottles of pop or Monkee cards.

The old fire station. When the siren blew, cars came flying down the street, skidding to a stop. Volunteer firefighter ran into the station and the trucks screamed away. After they left, I'd slip into the station and read the chalkboard. They wrote the location of the fire so any firefighters showing up later would know where to go.

This was the school--the high school wing is to the right of the gym. PRHS was closed in 1972; the grade school in 2003. This block-long building now houses city hall and the library.

This is the grade school wing of the Pawnee Rock school. When I was in 2nd grade they paved the playground with asphalt so we wouldn't have to play in the mud. The brick wall was home base for our Pom-pom-pull-away games. With the school now closed, weeds have taken over the playground and the city's police car is parked under the awning in front of the kindergarten door.
