Flyover People Small Towns:

Pawnee Rock, Kansas

The Post Office for 67567 is in the center of Pawnee Rock. The building originally was a bank. It had plate glass windows all along the front and the side, but they were often a vandalism target. Huge Cottonwood trees shaded the parking in front of these buildings when I was young; the cotton floated in mud puddles made by car tires.

The building to the right had a hairdresser and a laundromat. The garage next to it was Wilson Bros. where Willard Wilson had a welding shop. He kept the garage door open and there were always men standing around talking.

This is a booming Pawnee Rock about 1880.

Pawnee Rock is my hometown. I grew up here during the '60s and '70s. In Barton County on U.S. Highway 56, it's 8 miles east of Larned, 12 miles west of Great Bend. The population is about 350 and was about 400 when I lived there.

The tiny building on the left used to be the Midget Malt Shop. Ice cream cones were a dime, hamburgers were 25 cents. The other building was Betty's Cafe and was painted Pepto-Bismol pink. Betty's was a tavern and I was curious, but seldom had the opportunity to go in.

The depot was moved 20 years ago (or so) to a vacant lot. (It's where the row of stores was in the 1880 photo above). A community coffee is held here one Saturday morning each month.

The depot is just to the south of these buildings (on my left as I take the photo.) This is Main Street (Centre St.) looking north toward The Rock which is hidden in this photo.
