Flyover People Small Towns:

Pawnee Rock, Kansas - Page 2

This was an abandoned building even when I was a kid, but it had a roof then, and floors. The access we used was the cement stairway in front. The basement door was usually open. Nothing was inside, really, but we liked the idea that we weren't supposed to be in there.

City Hall has moved into the vacated school building. In the 60s, this store was the Pawnee Rock Dress Shop. They sold women's clothing--women wore dresses then. Polyster pantsuits were yet to come. The store sold scarves and gloves and a few items of jewelry.

The new fire department --new, in that it was built sometime after I left town 25 years ago. It is in the location of the lumberyard, across Main from the post office.

PR's city park: tennis and basketball courts, picnic tables, teeter-totters, swings, horseshoe pit and this beach volleyball court.
