On the floor inside the main entrance of the Kansas Union, you’ll find the evolution of the university mascot, the beloved Jayhawk. And yes, there is an Jayhawk evolution T-shirt.
They took a wrong turn in 1920, but quickly found their way back to something less realistic. Thank goodness. We are all about mythical birds, not real ones.
This is the most recent incarnation and he has staying power.
I’m a Jayhawk
by George Bowles
Talk about the Sooners, the Cowboys and the Buffs,
Talk about the Tiger and his tail,
Talk about the Wildcat, and those Cornhuskin’ boys,
But I’m the bird to make ’em weep and wail.
Chorus:
‘Cause I’m a Jay, Jay, Jay, Jay Jayhawk
Up at Lawrence on the Kaw
‘Cause I’m a Jay, Jay, Jay, Jay Jayhawk
With a sis-boom, hip hoorah.
Got a bill that’s big enough to twist the Tiger’s tail,
Husk some corn and listen to the Cornhusker’s wail,
‘Cause I’m a Jay, Jay, Jay, Jay Jayhawk,
Riding on a Kansas gale.
The 1946 one is the best one, IMHO.
I wasn’t very happy when K state changed their logo to this more stylized one they are using now.
And I miss the ESU bee too.
The Power Cat was designed by an ESU Graduate.
Well, now that I’ve criticized it, I hope it wasn’t you Roger! LOL It is fine, but I preferred, as with the ESU hornet, the ones with personality, they had eyes.

Who did do the logos? I tried to look it up and found one who told some of the logos of the past, but didn’t give the name of the artist who did the recent one at KState.
It’ll be interesting to see if they stay with the stylized ones over time or go back to the ones with personality. The stylized ones are attractive. But I liked the little anthropomorphized critters.
Just like some cartoon icons like MICKEY MOUSE,POPEYE,BUGS BUNNY,SUPERMAN the JAYHAWK has changed his origional looks to what it is now but his colors have remained about the same RED,BLUE and his distinctive yellow beak
