Winter Kill

WINTER KILL

Winter killed her

sure as a knife in the back.

It could’ve been the

body-stiffening cold

that sucked the life from her body

as it weasled into the house

under the door or through

the frost-laden window.

But I know it was the gloom

of gray that pressed down to the earth

so low it smothered her

like a feather pillow,

clamped over her face,

her arms free and flailing toward the sky

reaching for the negligent sun.

- by Cheryl Unruh

Actually, while the gray skies are annoying, it’s the snow and ice on the roads that I really, really, really hate.

Oh yes, I’m getting that more nowadays. It’s strange how I used to love Winter, loved the cold, absolutely couldn’t take the heat. Then I got hypothermia, slightly, and I’m back to being more normal now, for me anyway. Now the Winters get to me and I hate being cold.

Hang in there Cheryl and April. Spring is almost here.

Oh, and I forgot to mention, that’s wonderful poetry Cheryl. Beautiful.

Are you Russian, Cheryl? This seems a bit dirge-y.

Maybe I do enjoy poetry… and I don’t even dislike winter… but this week has been a bummer as I got a sore throat as soon as my company left and have not even been able to enjoy all the excuses to stay in bed and read. Ugh! I could use a little sunshine too.

    Salvation
    by Ray A. Randolph

    But…
as the last molecule of air
    escaped her trembling
    almost still lips
    Heliosana
    the spirit of spring warmth
    bidden by her plight
    touched an outstretched fingertip
infusing the chilled body and soul
    with heat and energy
    enabling a recovery
    from the bonds and bands
    of cold and gloom
    and providing infinite protection
    from future offending
    elements of nature

and so shall it always be,
    saith Heliosana!

Cheryl, one year Nina bought me the prettiest book to help me get thru the winter. It is called “And Spring Shall Come” It is a poem and many of the pages are vellum with beautiful pictures. You’ll just have to see it, I can’t explain it. I still have it and get it out once in a while.
