I took this photo recently in the Bernhard Warkentin house in Newton. These plates with the wheat design are not original to the house, but they use them there when serving meals at special events at the house. And wheat is an appropriate emblem for the man primarily responsible for introducing Turkey Red wheat to Kansas.

I’ll bet a lot of you grew up with these plates in your house. My Grandma Unruh had a set of these. They came from the Dillon’s Grocery Stores (or, quite possibly IGA stores).

  1. My grandma had a set too. My youngest daughter Alisha now has them. I love them she even has drinking glasses that match!

  2. Yes! We grew up with these and I’ll always have a soft spot for them. I also saw them used as part of the mosaic in the new Bowl Plaza in Lucas! Great way to preserve the past in an offbeat way!

  3. I think those were my first dishes when I took up housekeeping. I think my mom gave them to me and they came from the grocery store in Woodbine. That’s been a LONG time ago!
