A creature hides in an emergency lighting box in a mural at the Emporia Arts Council building. Now I always call it the Emporia Arts Center, just because that makes sense to me, but it is technically called the Emporia Arts Council and that’s important for this story.

The other night during the Iconic Kansas reception, I noticed a tour taking place and I tagged along as Director Melissa Windsor showed a dozen people the classrooms, etc. upstairs. Meanwhile, upstairs, Josh Finley, local artist and musician, was painting a mural in the hallway.

A castle – in the center of the mural. And this comes about because after one of the art-making sessions at the old art building, a little boy was leaving and he said, “I just love the Arts Castle.”

Melissa was thrilled that the boy heard castle instead of council. And she loved Josh’s ideas for this mural, which included the castle and all sorts of incredible creatures and things.

And the tour moved on and left Josh to his canvas.
