Today’s essay by my brother’s is now among my favorite pieces of his writing.
Leon Unruh’s tribute to our fifth grade teacher in Pawnee Rock, Mrs. Beulah White, is touching and beautifully written: Remembering Beulah White.

Read Leon’s piece and absolutely loved it…had tears running down my cheeks…we all have our own Mrs. White, if we are lucky.
A very touching tribute, Leon. It had a quality that reminded me of the Richard Dreyffus voice-over at the end of Stand by Me which I always found moving.
Kelley and Roger, thank you. Kelley, you’re absolutely right about how one person can lift us beyond the mundane through her courage. Roger, I hadn’t thought of Stand by Me, but that is an apt description of what our classroom — and the school — tried to do for Mrs. White in return for all she had done for us.
