Hey, I’ll be hitting my old stomping grounds on Thursday with a reading/book-signing event in Larned.

My book is Flyover People: Life on the Ground in a Rectangular State, which is a celebration of life in Kansas. The essays cover everything from wind and clouds to the people, history, cafes, to visiting the small towns and growing up in one.

Mystic Trove Book Boutique, 422 Broadway, Larned

Thursday, Oct. 21

4:00 – 6:30 p.m.

I think I’ll be reading some essays at 5:30, but I’m willing to jump up and read a piece or two upon request.

Raised in Pawnee Rock, Larned was the town next door. When I was a kid, we’d come here at least once a week for groceries – or for swimming in the city pool.

In my teenage years, I followed in my brother’s footsteps and wrote a column about high school news (Mustang Round-up) for the Larned Tiller and Toiler. And I took photos of football and basketball games and other high school events and sold them to the Tiller. The Tiller had an article about Flyover People last week.

After I graduated from Macksville, I spent a summer and a Christmas break working as a reporter/photographer for the Tiller and that job taught me so much – about journalism, about Larned, about people, about myself.

Anyway, I’ll be back in Larned on Thursday with Vesta at the Mystic Trove Book Boutique. If you live in the area, please stop by, I’d love to meet you. If you have friends in the Larned area that might be interested, please pass this link on to them. Thanks!

  1. That place didn’t exist (at least not as a bookstore) during the two or three years I lived in Larned. I don’t remember what was there, but I certainly would have loved a book store with a coffee shop in the back! Nice space.
