For some reason, I didn’t get a straight-on shot of Jennifer Slattery. But here she is listening to Town Crier’s Becky Smith (off camera) who is talking about the big book-signing event coming up in June.

This is the first author in a series of blog entries about the writers who attended a group book-signing at Emporia’s Town Crier Bookstore on April 3.

Jennifer Slattery lives in Kansas City, MO., and she had three self-published books with her. Two were children’s books: “Journey to the Ice” and “A Grand Canyon Adventure.” A third book was “The Jagged Edge of Broken Glass.”

Jennifer told me the story line of “The Jagged Edge of Broken Glass.” It’s a fictional version of the true story of her sister and brother-in-law. Her brother-in-law, in his 20s, received a diagnosis of M.S. which changed everything in their lives. He could no longer work with his severity of symptoms and his wife had to give up an impressive promotion so they could move to a warmer climate that might reduce his symptoms. The couple gave up on having children and then met a drug-addicted pregnant teenager who was planning to have an abortion. The girl is going to give them the baby, but then changes her mind. …

Jennifer talked about how the confused teenager (Juliana) grew through the process, how she learned that someone could care about her. Of Juliana, Jennifer said, “Sometimes it just takes one person to say you’re valuable (and change your life.)”
