Dave and I were out and about this afternoon and Dave suggested we run out to The Orchard, which is about 5-6 miles north of town on K-99, just where the highway curves to the east (at the Allen Road.)

Gala apples.

Bob Karr has Jonathans, Gala, Ozark Gold and um… oh, another yellow apple, I can’t remember the name.

Apple picking begins the last week of August, Karr said, and they finish in October with the Arkansas Black, Granny Smith and the Pink lady.

Soon he’ll be picking the Gold Rush, Braeburn and Autumn Gala.

Other customers came and went while we were there and others were out in the orchards picking fruit.

“Last weekend was unbelievable,” he said of business. “We had the cross country meet (at the Orchard) on Friday and that always brings a lot of people in, so Friday was a big day. Then Saturday was a super day and Sunday topped Saturday.”

He’s a farmer and has been doing cattle and hay and is going to wind those down and focus on the orchard.

Bob’s a nice guy. He’s always at the Emporia Farmers Market with his apples and honey.

They also have cider, cider slushees, honey, homemade noodles and a few other things.
