elevator

Open door – the elevator at the Emporia Public Library.

I am so not an elevator person.

Part of my elevator dislike is being in a tiny, confined space – with no windows and one iffy door.

Another part of my dislike is that if you take the elevator, you waste an opportunity to run, or at least walk, up the stairs. Stairs are a bonus, a freebie in the world of health and fitness.

Plus, stairs are usually faster than elevators.

When I was a teenager and my grandparents lived on the 9th floor of an apartment building in Fayetteville, Arkansas, I’d be on the 4th floor before the rest of the family even stepped on the elevator. Very seldom did they beat me to the 9th floor.

But this past month, I’ve taken the easy way out and used the elevator at the doctor’s office and at the library. Actually, it’s probably saved my life, because stairs and crutches don’t mix.

Soon, maybe in 2-3 weeks, I’ll be back to stair climbing.

  1. I got stuck in an elevator once, about 20 years ago I think, maybe a bit more. It was in the department store where my office was, before the store opened. I rang and rang the alarm, but nobody came. I finally found the phone they’d sort of hidden in the wall. LOL

I called the store operator. She said, “Oh, you’re really IN the elevator?” YES I AM!

they sent someone to get me out. Nobody apologized or asked if I was okay, or expressed any alarm that I’d been trapped in the elevator.
