So, I was standing in line at the store, looking at all the magazines in the check-out line. Michael Jackson, Michael Jackson, Michael Jackson, a bit of Farrah Fawcett, Michael Jackson… And a girl behind me said to her boyfriend, “He was cuter when he was black.”

Anyway, on one of the magazines, there was a small headline: “JFK Jr. 10 years later. New Photos.” (New photos?)

Ten years!?

Seriously, 10 years?

July 16, 1999.

Not that JFK, Jr. and I were buddies or anything, but his death was one of those startling moments for me because he was one of the first real icons of my generation to die.  I, we, had grown up with him in the news. His photo was in all the mags, all the time, along with his sister and Jackie-O. He had that tragic family history – and a vague legacy that we all expected him somehow to fulfill.

(OK, I had grown up with Michael Jackson, too, and liked him when he was young… “I’ll Be There” …but at some point he just went weird on us.)

But I swear, JFK Jr.’s plane crash seems like five, maybe six years ago. I remember one of the TV morning shows hauled in Sarah McLachlan to sing “Angel.” I love that song, but it seemed oddly inappropriate at the time.

Anyway, 10 years passes way too quickly these days.

  1. And I don’t remember the hubbub about JFK JR like we’ve been subjected to with MJ. Tired of it. I suppose there was s bit of hubbub but I just don’t remember it going on and on.

  2. TELL me about it!! Not much more than 10 years ago I had a toddler and a wee baby. It’s all craziness, the way this time thing keeps passing.

  3. My life is going by so fast now. 10 Years ago I had been in Kansas a bit over 4 years. I didn’t have grandchildren yet, and now I have four.

April, I don’t remember the hubbub about JFK JR. either. But I was actually interested in that story. The MJ story doesn’t interest me. He went from being sort of a living has-been one day to a dead greatest musician ever. Go figure.
