See that red/white rectangle in the middle of the We Kan! sign?

We Kan! …  And we are!

That tells the whole story.

But, actually, the story is so big that it can’t be completely told.

This is the story of the Whiting Cafe. It’s the story of Rosa Thomas. A community. Volunteers from across the state. Carpenters, cleaners, painters.

It’s the story of one phone call that happened at the right time.

It’s the story of Marci Penner, who is not trying to save the world. Just Kansas. Rural Kansas.

It’s the story of people who believe in this state and in each other. It’s Bob Topping of Leavenworth and Gene Merry of Burlington. It’s Ron Frank with a video camera who will compress 2.5 days into 2.5 minutes. It’s Michael from Lawrence, the window guy. It’s Jerry, the floor guy. It’s WenDee LaPlant who’s feeling the ache today from scrubbing walls yesterday.

It’s a feel-good story of Kansans who believe in small communities, of Kansans who just want to be of service.
