On US 56, west of McPherson, there’s a sign that points to the north and says “Marquette 12 miles.”

We’ve always said, “Hey, we should go to Marquette sometime,” but when we see the sign we’re either on the way to visit my dad or on the way home. And a trip to and from Dad’s is a whole day in itself, 2 1/2 hours out there, 2 1/2 hours back, plus lunch and a little visiting time.

So, we’ve never taken the extra hour that it would take to drive the 24 miles out of the way it would take to see Marquette.

But on this last trip out, we spent the night and we were coming back bright and early on a Sunday morning and saw the sign and took the diversion.

It’s one of those towns that makes you glad you came. Everything was closed on a Sunday morning, but it was a well-kept town. Lots of interesting buildings downtown – a motorcycle museum and a history museum. And a lovely park. An art gallery and studio, a pleasant looking restaurant that was preparing for the noon meal. It’s definitely a town I’d like to revisit during business hours.

Marquette has about 542 people.
