Isn’t this great? Emporia woodcarver Millard Harrell created this incredible piece: “The Newspaper Editor.”

  1. I know exactly the photo that inspired Millard’s carving. It is in the front pages of Beverley Buller’s “From Emporia: The Story of William Allen White.” I was so surprised when I first saw the image in the book because it captured Editor White as he must have been in life – animated, jocular, friendly, fun. Most photos of White are posed in the dignified convention of the the day for someone in his position. This is a candid capture and is very revealing. If you have Buller’s book flip through the first few pages and you will see how Millard has captured our Sage.

I loved that shot and it must have engaged Millard, as well. Good job, Millard.

  2. Thanks Cheryl. I had put this in the Discussion under Regional Arts & Literature – then under Woodcarving Classes Millard Harrell FHTC. However, I will put the same note here –
Be sure and click on the Woodcarving Illustrated Message Board (under the Newspaper Editor) in the Gallery of Millard’s web site that Cheryl linked above.
Woodcarving Illustrated is a national woodcarving magazine which Millard posts on frequently and enjoys all of the other woodcarvers posts and comments. His story of the Newspaper Editor makes the carving even more enjoyable.
Roger is right, Millard used the picture that was in Beverly Olson Buller’s book “From Emporia – The Story Of William Allen White” – opposite the Title Page.
