Had an idea for a new series of photos – Church Sunday. I’m thinking of posting a photo of a Kansas church (a majority will probably be Emporia churches, because they’re so darned convenient) every Sunday.

Fun, huh?

OK, so this is the First Congregational Church in Emporia, at 12th and State.

If you look closely, you’ll note the crech, cresh, nativity scene on the grounds to the left. (I looked it up, it’s creche.)

I’ve got a friend who’s kind of an expert on post-WWII church architecture, so he’s got me looking at churches in a new way.

  1. Oh, this will be interesting. I’ve been planning on my next “Madison Kansas” page on my site being all the churches in Madison, and the Lamont Wesleyan Church in Lamont, because so many people from Madison go to church there. But now I’m thinking about waiting until Spring, and doing something else about the Madison area next.

I’ll be interested to see your comments on the Emporia and other churches.

There was a time I wanted to visit every Catholic Church in Kansas. I wanted to see the inside of each one. Sacred Heart in Emporia is beautiful inside.

The Catholic Church in Bucyrus, Kansas is gorgeous inside. They have a statue there, as I recall it’s a Pieta statue. It is so huge I would like to know how they got it inside. I’m wondering if they built the building around the statue.

Another well worth seeing inside is the one at Victoria. That one is just amazing, overwhelming. If you drive out there again, and there’s nothing going on inside, go try the doors. They used to allow visitors.

I’m certain there are some amazing Churches here in Kansas that I haven’t seen, of all denominations. I’d love to see them if people can share where they are.

  2. Sacred Heart is beautiful inside. I was there for a funeral recently – hadn’t been in the church for probably more than a decade. They did a nice job of painting and all after the fire/smoke damage that happened several years ago.

I had to look Bucyrus up (it’s in Miami County). If we ever get out that way again, I’ll have to remember to stop and look at the church there.

And Victoria is definitely on my list too.

  3. I believe Stanley Hagen, an Emporia architect, designed the main part of the First Congregational Church. Brinkman and Hagen designed the Episcopal church and Charles Squires designed the Romanesque First Presbyterian.

The Congregational parish was William Allen White’s church. I have been told that this church and the Friends were the first denominations to accept Darwin’s theory.

  4. Janet,
Help me out. I cannot find a Catholic Church listed for Bucyrus . I looked in church directory for Kansas City Kansas Archdiocese and in Wichita Diocese and could not find a listing. I am sure this area must be around the Garnett- Gridley-Scipio area.
    Cheryl,
I think the idea of church pictures and stories is a good idea. Flyoverpeople just goes on and on. Keep up the good work.
    Tom
