At the William Allen White House, it was Poetry on the Porch day (which you may have read about on NASCAR.com.)

Kevin Rabas started the program by reading several of White’s poems. He then read some of his own poetry from his recently published book, “Bird’s Horn.” Kevin is co-director of ESU’s creative writing program.

You can listen to the title poem from his book here.

Antonia Felix read a few of her poems. She teaches English at ESU and is a New York Times best-selling author.

Laura Myers, a graduate student at ESU, read poems about Kansas and family. She said she writes to document life, “If I don’t write it down, it’s like it never happened. … As a poet, I see myself as a witness.”

(I’m with Laura – that’s exactly why I write. I, too, am a documenter.)

The “On the Porch” series continues next Sunday, Sept. 30, at 2 p.m. with “Politics on the Porch.” Dr. Karen Manners Smith will present the program. The William Allen White House is at 10th and Exchange in Emporia.
