Regina Murphy, who writes Murphy’s Menu for the Emporia Gazette held a Pumpkin Cook-off at the Farmers Market this morning.

Let’s just say yum! Good stuff. It was hard to choose just one pumpkin thing because I love all things pumpkin. People sampled the pumpkin entries and voted. Results will be in next Wednesday’s Gazette, in the Murphy’s Menu column.

When I mentioned the pumpkin goodies to Rand Simmons, he said, “I don’t want to think about pumpkin. It’s not Thanksgiving yet.”

The highlight of today’s market was… Jim’s back! We’ve all missed Jim Wallace, the buffalo and egg man. (Well, he also sells elk and goat, hamburger and sausage.)

Since I already had eggs in my fridge (but not his good eggs), I only bought sausage and buffalo, some of his wife’s (Marilyn’s) banana bread and a morning glory muffin. Mmm. Later, we visited with Marilyn at her booth at the Great American Market on Commercial Street which is going on all day today. Dave insisted we get some of Marilyn’s blackberry jam.

  1. Oh man Cheryl, you’d better stock up. YOu’re going to miss the farmer’s market when it ends for the season. You’ve done such a good job of sharing it, that it seems like the best year ever. I hope it’s as great next year. It’s one of the best things in Emporia.

I used to do the opening sometimes and carry the clipboard at the farmer’s market, years ago. I sure enjoyed it.

  2. Our kids & grandsons bought another goat from Jim & Marilyn last night—-a Buck to go with their herd!

I talked to my daughter today & I said– well how is the new Buck doing—& she said– her Hubby said– it is like the kids at the play ground with a new kid at school—as the Buck stands at one end of the pen & all the others stand & just look at him!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’m sure they will all do well once they allow him his place on the farm!!!!!

Our middle Grandson bought two Nannie Goat from them last year!

Our daughter –said about Jim & Marilyn— are just like us—-you name the animal & they have it!!!!! 🙂

They have been very nice to our children!!!!!!!!

  3. you know, when I was a little kid, my little sister couldn’t say “Janet”, she said, “Nannie.” My mother called me “Nanny Goat” for many years after that. I was an adult by the time she stopped. But I never minded it, it was a term of endearment.
