…my dear friends. What brings you to the Flyover People Daily News?

Do you like the photos best, or the chatter?

I don’t really have a plan here (that’s obvious). This isn’t specifically a writing blog, an Emporia blog, a travel blog, or a small towns blog.

I just take pictures of whatever happens to be in my way.

And I comment on photos, but realized that I don’t really write much here.

So- I’m just wondering what you all would like more of – photos or writing? Or does it matter?

  1. Its like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get.

As an Emporia visitor, I like the serendipity of what you are doing here. Sometimes Daily News gives a clue on your next column. It is always fun to guess your topic, Cheryl.

I think I like the weather snaps and caps the best. There is a currency on the ground in this rectangular state. You often draw attention to the mundane and help us all appreciate the little things. The revisits to your childhood gives variety and insight into your grounding.

    Just some thoughts.

  2. Hmm… you update frequently so it’s like having little shout-outs from your next door neighbor, only in cyberspace. Makes for nice breaks for me when I’m “working”. Love seeing so many things Kansan. You make it to places I haven’t made time for yet. You are also my main source for things to do/see locally and I really appreciate that. Enjoy your ponderings and musings. It’s all good.

  3. I love it just as it is! But, if you feel like changing, I’ll probably like that. I love your writing–it’s like reading a story/book but you’re a REAL person, so it’s a little like looking into your life. (hope you don’t mind) Also, other’s blogs just make this site even more interesting and better! I have to check it every day–sometimes more than just once–to see WHAT is going on and what the discussion is about today!

  4. Cheryl, I enjoy your daily news however you do it. You are a real person and I enjoy seeing your world from your eyes, whether it be in pictures or words. Your words often create pictures in my mind anyway.

The thing is, it’s your view of the world, not something you were contracted to write, so you are doing it your way. And personally, that’s what I want to see and read. If you change anything, I hope it’s just a natural change that goes with the growth in your life.

    Janet

  5. Why do I do the Daily News? Let me count the reasons….

As a Kansan so far from home, I enjoy reading and seeing what you, Cheryl, and all the others have to say. Listening to real people and seeing photos keep me tuned in to my home state.
When you mention places, I go to the map on my wall, any web sites you provide, and sometimes to Marci’s Kansas Guidebook.

Writing or photos?? Since you asked, more of both please.

  6. I like everything you write & your pictures——–etc/etc——
    Telling us about events——& people———etc/etc—
But one thing I really / really-really-really—–enjoy is——–we are not that far from Emporia–but our local news & weather on our “dish” were we live is Joplin, Mo.——so I really like it– when you tell us about weather reports——& news that we miss other wise—–because we hear the Joplin, Mo. News & weather —— when you say– a storm is there in Emporia-etc/etc– ——-then I start searching for weather reports on the Internet——–to keep up——–you let us know out here –what is going on with the Emporia area— & also the rest of Kansas!!!!!!! And I really-really appreciate those reports!!!!!!!!! And I think you have really helped us to have a heads up-to different storms–that other wise we would not have had a report on!!!!!!!!!
I like all you do——–as it is just you——-& how you do “your thing”——-& I love & appreciate you & what you do!!!!!!!! And also what Dave does!!
There are many-many-many other Kansas web sites trying to tell about Kansas-promote Kansas——-get forums going– & no one goes there—–BUT WE HAVE FUN HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    You help make that fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    You promote Kansas — & it’s events & it’s people & you -educate——–& you -encourage——& you give facts!!!
People like you!!!!!!!!!! And you draw people to your web site——you do more than many——who work really hard———& don’t in one way of saying it— have any business on their web site!!!!!!!!!
I know people who work really hard to have a web site to give information-& promote Kansas———-& no one goes there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I hear all the time——–Well I heard about it——–on FOP———as you guys were talking about it!!!!!!!!!!!
We are like a small town coffee shop—here———–we discuss & try to find solutions to the problems———- & we socialize & support each other—-& check on each other——& care about each other——–& it is our time to get together——–we promote—–we share——we laugh & we would be lost if the coffee shop ever closed!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’m just damned glad you have the coffee shop open 24 hours a day -7 days a week——where we can come———thank you!!!!!!!!!!

  7. All the above plus you give me an insight into the adult world not associated with my work. I like having adult conversation with others besides fellow workers and my kids. It makes me a more “rounded” person.

  8. Thanks for the feedback and the kind words. I read other blogs that have good writing and I find I want to do more of that. But good writing takes time – and photographs often make an easy post – and add color and show the scene without a lot of wordy descriptions.

I get a lot of enjoyment out of this, mainly because you readers are so great at commenting.

Mainly, I want the blog to be fun and useful to you all. I’m just trying to document this place and this time – and say/show “this is what it’s like to live in Kansas.”

  9. You document “what it’s like to live in Kansas” very well. I enjoy the pictures and your writing about Emporia and Kansas. I am from and still live in Virginia. I HAD some very limited views of Kansas and the prairie before reading your daily news and the rest of your web page. Your writing style is natural, and describes Kansas so well I can almost feel the wind on my face. I wish that I could see it for real and not be limited to photographs on the computer (though they are excellent!). Great work!

  10. Some time back I heard about the Flint Hills and the tallgrass prairie. So I started searching the web and Flyover People popped up. I read your columns and looked through all the links about the photographers and artists. I got hooked. So barely a day passes anymore when I don’t take a look and see what’s new. And there’s always lots to see.

  11. Well, that’s great, Weeta. It’s nice to have you along for the ride!

I liked your line … “I can almost feel the wind on my face.”

Today – no wind. What’s up with that? Today is calm and sunny and green. May is one of the best months to be in Kansas. (Except for those pesky killer tornadoes.) 🙁

  12. Yup, I agree with everyone above (and will be running for president shortly…) – and again, it’s what Cheryl suddenly decides to chuck in the saucepan that makes it a brilliant up to the minute read. More pics? Yes! More writing? Bring it on!

I have to say I’m often knocked out by the pics – the weather ones are sometimes scary (we live in Engalnd: we have the most comforting weather in the world); your towns: just fascinating; the people – these faces are living lives so different from mine.

    I’ll echo Weeta.
