At Saturday’s Artists Walk, Millard Harrell was in Dayton’s Hobby Shop.

To celebrate Emporia’s sesquicentennial, Millard carved some native cottonwood to make four designs.

Apparently, cottonwood is not easy to carve. “It tends to split and chip,” Millard said. “It’s very unforgiving. All in all, it’s a very disagreeable wood.”

One of the four designs he created for the sesquicentennial is “The Veteran” as seen below.

Millard will have his work at Art in the Garden at Toad Hollow Daylily Farm June 2-3.
