Learn about William Allen White!

June 3 – June 8, 2007

Who was William Allen White?

“Sage of Emporia,” White shaped opinions and events as editor and publisher of The Emporia Gazette. Whether fighting the Ku Klux Klan or embracing women’s suffrage, this Pulitzer Prize winner captured international minds from (his home in) America’s heartland.

Join scholars, journalists and White descendants for an intimate walk in his footsteps. Historians weave anecdotal stories with primary sources for a vibrant picture of White’s storied life. Other discussions cover populists, today’s political polarization and more. See where White wrote, lived and sought inspiration.

At the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve, biologists and geologists detail the complex ecosystem belying an austere beauty that so moved White.

  1. Thanks for highlighting this, Cheryl. I like to call it “William Allen White Camp.”

At this typing 10 are registered four months before the institute. It caps at around 35 registrants, so there are 25 more spaces open. March will be the prime-time registration period.

Currently couples from Texas, Tennessee, Colorado, Leawood and Neosho Rapids, Kansas are registered. It is not a couples thing only. Individuals can register.

This is the first of what I hope are many White Elderhostels. I think we are designing a program that is really going to WOW the seasoned Elderhostel student. It should rise above a typical experience with a substantive profile on White, showcase Emporia and our hospitality and create a great word-of- mouth as participants move on to other programs.

There are very few Elderhostels that focus on Journalism history. We have many White sites to highlight right here in Emporia which will enrich the experience.
