This is the Arkansas River as seen from the Pawnee Rock bridge. I took this photo about a year ago.

On Kansas Public Radio this morning, Rex Buchanan talked about Kansas’ Water Woes.

Recently, Buchanan, who works for the Kansas Geological Survey, had the opportunity to tour Western and Central Kansas with some water experts from Asia. They stopped at the Arkansas River east of Larned.

Looking at the dry river bed, a visitor from Nepal asked Rex, “Which way would the river flow if there were water in it?”

“If there were water here, which way would it flow? Now, I’m just speaking for myself, but that question, combined with the tire tracks in the sandy river channel, strikes me as more than just a little sad,” Rex said.

Rex always offers important insights in his radio commentaries. I hope you’ll listen to this one about Kansas’ water issues.

  1. Cheryl———we have friends from out in western Kansas——–& from the ice & snow melt—–we hear they are watching for flooding in areas—–I pray those empty ponds & river beds have water flowing in them now!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. Cheryl, I like that picture, the colors are so soft in an otherwise rather harsh environment, a dry riverbed. Starts out with pinks and grays and moves back to yellows and browns, then to blue. It’s a story in itself.
