Calling all Kansans!

What high schools are you familiar with that have closed/consolidated? Do you know the year the school closed? The school colors? The team mascot?

Brian Richter from Sterling wandered onto FlyoverPeople the other day, looking for information.

He noticed that I had written about Pawnee Rock and Lehigh schools being closed and asked me if I knew of other towns with closed schools.

I figured I could come up with one or two, but I thought about you readers because I know many of you like trivia-type questions. So I checked with Brian to see if he’d mind if I posted this on the Daily News and asked him for details of his project(s).

I’ll let him explain:

We are researching small town high schools that closed when schools consolidated or when forced to close because of low enrollment.

We are wanting to know Mascots, colors, and year the school closed.

I am a teacher at Sterling High School and a small business owner. Old School You (we take vintage old school football and basketball 16mm film and videos and place them on DVD so friends, family and alumni can purchase them.)

At SHS we require students to do a senior project. A project one of my students has developed, is to create an Old School t’shirt/sweatshirt line of clothing that deals mainly with closed high schools, their mascots, their colors, and the year they closed. The shirts would be able to be ordered online at the website www.oldschoolyou.com

He is wanting to provide former members of the town, current residents, as well as graduates to once again show their pride in their old school For instance. Alden High School closed in 1967. Residents now send their children to Sterling USD 376. Those residents still have a lot of pride in the Alden Schools. The students that attend SHS from Alden were excited to know that they might be able to wear a shirt that proudly displays their hometown high school. They also thought it would be a great gift for their parents, grandparents, and relatives.

We also hope to also create a unique source for finding out that these small towns had a high school and what their mascot was.

If you would also like to post on your site that we are always looking for those old 16mm game films that would be great too. We will give a free DVD copy for each film that is donated.

If you feel we are being too commercial we understand. Our goal is to preserve these valuable bits of history that are quickly deteriorating.

Future contact will be made from a student by the name of Andy Ball of Sterling.

So, my friends, help out if you’d like. It would be fun to see how many places we can come up with.

  1. My county was Atchison which has the second oldest community high school in state history (1891). I don’t think we had high schools beyond Atchison High in Atchison city. I really don’t remember any in outlying counties.

  2. I grew up in Chase County——–
And I have the information on when many of the schools in Chase county closed ——I just have to look up the information—–
like the one room grade schools——there were many—-do you want that information?????????
And the High Schools in towns like Clements & Cedar Point & Elmdale & Saffordville & Strong City & Matfield Green——etc/etc—–
my memory is bad——–any more——so I have to check my lists——to be sure—–I could guess-/but I have to check to know for sure what years!

  3. It was fun to read through that list of school mascots. Thanks, ralphie, and welcome!

Lots of Wildcats and, surprisingly, Bulldogs. A few Buffaloes and many Indian-related mascots.

I always liked the Chase Kats and the Lyons Lions. 🙂

  4. Cheryl, thanks so much for posting this online. Interestingly enough I live in Sterling just a few short miles from Lyons and Chase.

The list was unbelievably helpful. I’m now looking for the colors of these schools. We thoroughly appreciate the information. We are interested in putting together as many Old High Schools Schools as we can.

  5. Sunflower posted this on the Discussion Board:

For some reason, I cannot post a comment under the school closing discussion. So I have decided to post from a new discussion topic. Hope someone gets this info. I have two schools- both located in Greenwood county that merged to Madison-Virgil USD #386.
Virgil High School – last graduating class 1965, colors- blue and white, mascot- bluebirds
Lamont High school- last graduating class 1964, colors- red and white,
    mascot- Cardinals.
I have several family members and friends who would love having one of these sweatshirts. Wonderful idea for us history buffs.
