This week marks my 4-year anniversary of writing the Flyover People column. My first column was published on January 28, 2003, just in time for Kansas Day.

When I got the go-ahead to write the column in January of 2003, John Lechliter, Managing Editor of The Gazette at the time, said something like, “Some people think they can write a column, but they run out of things to say after a few weeks. We’ll give you a shot and see how it goes.”

John Lechliter was right; some days I do run out of things to say — but I haven’t let that keep me from publishing a fresh column every week for four years. Hee-hee-hee.

  1. Cheryl, you have a way of invoking wonderful deep feelings that just bring tears to my eyes and a lump in my throat. I hope you are saving all these and will someday get them all put into a book and published. I want to be the first to buy it.

  2. Tuesday is one of my favorite days. Why, you ask??? It’s the day that Cheryl’s “Flyover People” column is published in the Gazette! (When my paper doesn’t appear, I’m tempted to drive to Emporia to get one!) Every column is better than the previous one and she has a talent for making it seem like she’s writing to me on a personal level, almost interactive. I hope the Emporia Gazette realizes what a TREASURE she is!
