Chris White Walker (in white shirt) shakes the hand of Gin Wong while Jim Meeks says hello to Hattie Walker on Saturday at the William Allen White State Historic Site in Emporia.

Gin Wong, Jim Meeks and Karl Samuels took a break from a reunion of their WWII bombardment group in Wichita on Saturday to visit Emporia.

During the war, these three men flew in a B-29 bomber named for William Allen White, famed owner and editor of The Emporia Gazette.

In their B-29, Gin Wong was the radar navigator, Karl Samuels, a gunner, and Jim Meeks, radioman.

These three gentlemen were at this house 62 years ago. The crew of the William Allen White B-29 visited White’s widow, Sallie, when they came to Kansas in 1945 to pick up the aircraft.

Chris Walker is the great-grandson of W. A. and Sallie White and is the current editor and publisher of The Emporia Gazette. The Pulitzer-prize winning newspaper has been family-owned since 1895.
