crazy men in shorts
crazy men in shorts

I called them crazy men in shorts, but I’m terribly envious of anyone who doesn’t feel the cold. Steve Graham (on the left, don’t know the guy on the right) said he went home from work and changed into shorts. He loves this weather. This afternoon’s market is a damp 57 degrees with a breeze (that blew over a table and umbrella). It’s cold. And dreary. It rained yesterday afternoon and all day today.

A bit ago we were watching The Weather Channel and we’re getting some of the bands of rain leftover from Hurricane Gustav. “That’s what were in,” Dave said. “A hurricane. It’s not so bad.”

Tracey Graham rings the 5:00 bell to signal the opening of the market.

This is just some dried dill. From several yards away I could smell the aroma. Dill smells like my grandma’s brooder house. That’s where she dried her dill, in the years after they quit raising chicks.

The pumpkins added a bright spot to the gray afternoon.

  1. The weather was chilly but nice yesterday. It would have been perfect had it not been raining. I stepped outside to feed the animals in the morning and felt fall coming. As soon as I came inside I did a search for apple orchards. I keep hoping there will someday be one closer than Steffen’s in Conway Springs. Steffen’s is nice; I just like variety. We’ve gone there for forever. There used to be a place in Whitewater, Regier’s, but I don’t think they’re still in business. At least they aren’t advertising it anywhere I’ve been able to find it.

  2. Prairie air, There’s one in Homewood, outside of Ottawa, just off I 35 southbound. Take a drive up I 35, stop thru Emporia for a visit and head north. It’s just before you get to Ottawa. All kinds of apples.
Conway Springs? My dads family was originally from there.

  3. Shep, wondering if you guys have peaches and are there still some available. Apples? Do I need to belong to the co-op to buy them?
